Session 3: AAC and Literacy

Literacy and AAC development go hand in hand. In this session, we will explore how AAC systems can create meaningful opportunities for developing reading and writing skills across everyday activities. Participants will discover practical strategies for integrating literacy instruction into AAC use and learn how to support communication and literacy growth simultaneously. Through examples and discussion, we will highlight how AAC users can engage with language, print, and learning in ways that build confidence, participation, and long-term literacy success.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will be able to:

• Describe the relationship between AAC and literacy development and explain why literacy is an important goal for AAC users. (Understand)
• Analyze literacy opportunities within AAC systems and identify ways to support reading and writing throughout daily interactions. (Analyze)
